He led on horseback,
Raising his flag to fly high,
To herald the train.

Room for three hundred,
Yet many more loaded on,
In wagons of coal.

They whooped and hollered,
Eager to make history,
“On to Darlington!”

And then downward the train sped,
Ten miles per hour.

As we race to the future,
Driven by genius.”

Into town they rolled,
To be greeted by thousands,
“Our next stop, Stockton!”
